We headed out early-ish, although I would probably have gone as early as possible next time. We got to the Plaza España metro, which is one of the main connector stations to regional trains. In the station we found the Montserrat ticket office. For 19,50€ (in Spain periods are commas and commas are periods!) we got a ticket which includes the metro ride, the train to Montserrat Aeri, the cremallera (or cog train) and the fee for 2 funiculars.

We got on the train at 9:30 and we were in Montserrat Aeri by about 10:30. We all got off the train and waited for the cremallera, which was a beautiful train ride, winding high up into the hills. The view was spectacular. The rick formations are really unique here, with wonderful spire-like rock 'towers' jutting up into the sky.
After about 15 minutes, we arrived at the monastery. The grounds were smaller than I thought, but hell, the fact that they built this place so far up is quite a wonder! After a snack we headed into the entrance to the main grounds. There is a large square, the museum (which we skipped) and the cathedral. After a few quick snaphots, we headed into the cathedral. The boys choir was singing at 1pm so we wanted to get a good seat. Throngs of people were lining up to see 'La Moreneta' or the Black Madonna, a small 12th Centuruy Romanesque sculpture of the Virgin Mary at the back of the church, which is the official patron of Catalonia. The boys choir sang beautifully and their voices echoed through the church...quite a moment.

After this, we headed to the funicular, which heads up the hill on (at least) a 45-degree angle all the way up! At the top, there are many trails you can take with various lengths. I think you can hike all the way up here from the villages below as well. We took a shorter route which takes you to this little chapel on a high ridge. Apparently on a clear day, you can see as far as Mallorca and the Pyrennes to the east. It was a bit hazy today, but still, the view was fantastic!

My parents took the funicular back down to the monastery after about 2 hours, but I decided to walk down the path. It was quite a site seeing the monastery grounds below as the path slowly turned and headed back. We didn't have time to take the funicular down to another spot where apparently the Vigin Mary made an appearance, but I'm sure I'll be back. For me, the hiking amongst the rocks and valleys below was more spiritual than any church could ever be.

For more pictures, please visit my Facebook album.Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-28795303970929241722007-04-09T14:32:00.000-07:002008-12-09T01:58:38.558-08:00Salvador Dali in Figueres<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSlhAPpSm-bXiBsm_4PE6pbkX0tp4xnQLXlKqTZA8LSmSs2TKABqdi8TOCujkTlG5WtlNYnxbbh_cgCdg5i89GVmxSBvBW5NH1Zb9OuAeaVZVRRiwGjLKUt3epiyaUo3P4CYLIwn7_2eWv/s200/P1000126.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055258727951126674" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjlijCZKqRspKq07uhGKEoygNXhXh2HXMUPzv9y7pZgVg8kGU80QR12gTvmn7GgAM6d3odTc_rZ2fM2YNE5uyLBsvRmchWsQxkmxWNS1PqofT-F_NtxO6WqhPdWJaCwUbIVdJ8YDCN6yq1/s200/P1000128.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055258736541061282" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgavV5bZ9tYy75qlGniiNypddigQQVcnGDzX6XNSfAYj0uAmIoxW1OCVL-vpeeSOjw-yArTzMmMHm364KWwM-0N75rYkW5GauAJwvjdYPVlQ9APpbStHSXIzME4E6nEjIp3wGp-rUp0S91A/s200/P1000138.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055258745130995890" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi95EVnp0me89hzvUt_iW21G82vfT2sWhjUgKR4k6dOkRgZgWJF19ILsket96nmQUZwV2AFTN9CzGxEvdX0Yq5xHNgHi6bsCFzX8iHHSR-docPpbHOAlNsQoQMl6mDJv2-xTNn20UuGiLuo/s200/P1000158.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055258749425963202" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF_Oa1HR3bC6VIMmtyv21u1UG6yv-alF1M4wI-5XHll-tUEBlLdpfGyO6Td-qLwIRd9X_YdmMTYJzYYHP0neurCYe9N46AiPqyroJ6TJoWHTqz29IM_5YG67CXhLLkkg5FHe03wCi5KZh7/s200/P1000173.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055258758015897810" />
The next morning after my fantastic hike, I decided to get the first bus out of Cadaques headed for Figueres again in hopes of catching a more reasonable line up at the Dalí museum. The bus ride was equally amazing going out of Cadaqués. There were still clouds down in the valley below and as you can see in the first picture, it was totally amazing.

I reached Figueres and walked into town after stowing my bags and luckily there was no line up at all. The museum was like walking into a crazy dream. When you first walk in, you are met with a large courtyard in which was an old car being pulled by some sort of Hindu goddess. High above the car was a boat with static water drop dangling from the bottom like stalactites. At the extreme top was a small umbrella, which apparently opens when it's raining.

The inner hallways curved around the main courtyard, filled with many sketches, strange mannequins and objects. Behind the courtyard was a huge room covered by an amazing glass dome. Inside this grand hall were some huge tapestries of some of Dalí's most famous work.

Dalí seemed to be fascinated with optical illusion. A lot of his pictures were contained in glass boxes with a v-shaped piece of glass in the centre. If you stood directly in the centre, the paintings would become 3D. With the picture shown here of Dalí painting his wife Gala, her foot totally came out at you.

Other highlights included: a painting on hydraulics which would open up before you when you put in a coin; the Mae West room, which consisted of a sofa which looked like lips, a fireplace which looked like a nose and 2 pictures on the wall. When you went up a small staircase, the pictures turned into eyes and you realize that you are looking at a portrait of Mae West. Even her hair was made by the curtains that hung on the wall; a Sistine cahapel-like room depicting Gala and Salvador ascending to heaven; a metal coil which descended from the ceiling and on the end of it was a grimacing face.

It was a cool place all in all and a great way to end a fantastic long weekend.Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-4278408050234052492007-04-08T10:41:00.000-07:002008-12-09T01:58:39.159-08:00Easter in Cadaques - Part II<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh2LuPAvnN_qBpHNVB2Qr4_2OMHo2eBXsjB1cB2uaEIlPV-V_v1ENpOiTB5Kk6eAroOoiuIg7fM8hd4K5VYWcGxgF1E857llhJgoNz-nppLIRxL2oR4vEoS1_yfLsc23flb1P5ZR7nz3O5/s200/P1000085.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055196880422064194" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFcKv6iR4bk90bR6nEx3QdTG7MXSsgr0JZ23qDY5cxQ1AMs5OEnnVUR4_j4feRSUdqR1arjR9TX_axn14-Bt0EzHSVqWEECUMG9Tv8OUxvEZv3RqicrTs_VEYRNHylzLBQRaK32tN88uLh/s200/P1000093.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055196884717031506" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX2vTF9ZZ_anQQnxPd-AOM6q1jl-Ms1SX2Yl9cbicrLlZj3vVxhwqWgMiet3pRdCFfow9kuGYH5y2mCkAzL-8JmKL0-mpFfOwGPmJySKxqtefNE3zis58N1NsqHJLIxnOe9bkPIUpBeQAc/s200/P1000096.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055196897601933410" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw3kIUO7y0s0Ak_NiTig99UAvMIYdGU5JYIWFTLqMQauYrjBZqC1vRyASuQiXJXxGIGwrIZVGgB-0SwDdJ8axvsNK-eS6U3anXVQQfrishE_osq7ngJW5pCme3olD1IwMtaRSAJ6Cs2P2_/s200/P1000102.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055196901896900722" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSeRRM6hD7QmNbjeshbOjE-5a-oMFPmfGZYdM1CysxstKucSKFMnWW9UBi5K5WEDPwb2dSB92pCyv_BKk-rVzffDJCE91TJQUO1qmDn7J6Mm4aifGquNrR1vMkiN1lcGD33p1zx_wFjoK6/s200/P1000111.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055196919076769922" />
The next morning in Cadaques I got an early start. The sun was still shining brightly and the first thing I did was have a coffee and a bocadillo in the town square. I could have sat for hours watching the shimmering water in the morning light.

I walked out of town on the north end of the bay on the road. I soon found the trail which hugged the coast. Porous rock jutted out in all angles. The vegetation was quite dry and sparse. Along the way, I saw some kayakers coming into the bay. How great would that be? I also saw several groups of scuba divers along the coast. The Costa Brava is known for its amazing diving opportunities.

There were some amazing homes along the way...all made of shale and very square and modern. There was one particular house on its own little island. Very nice.

I walked around the bay, but soon found that I could no longer walk along the cliff as it was cut off by homes etc. I doubled back and soon found the path to Lloret de Mar. This is just a tiny fishing village with nothing really there except for Salvador Dalí's house. I walked down the path to the village. I knew I was close when I saw to strange white heads jutting out from the trees, which are on top of Dalí's house.

For anyone wanting to come here, note that you have to book ahead to get into his house, or wait around for a cancellation. I knew this the night before, but since it was Easter it would have been impossible to get in I think. After a brief rest on the bay and some photos of the colourful fishing boats, I headed up into the hills again.

The nice thing about Cadaqués is that it's within a national park, so you can hike all the way to the French border if you want. Far away in the north I could see Cap de Creus, which is the easternmost point in Spain. It was about 8km away from Lloret de Mar, so I knew I would not make it that far. Apparently the sunsets there are breathtaking...well, I'm sure there will be a next time.

So I hiked and hiked, looking at the steep drop from the cliffs into the azure-blue water below. Absolutely stunning, especially once you get away from all of the houses. I had packed a lunch the night before, and soon I found the perfect spot. Just off the hiking trail was a small ledge on the cliff. I walked down to the ledge, opened my backpack and had my lunch, looking at this gorgeous view in front of me. It was so hot I took off my clothes and let the sun warm my back.

This was truly one of my favourite days in Spain so far.Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-4468369790775033062007-04-07T10:14:00.000-07:002008-12-09T01:58:39.857-08:00Easter in Cadaques - Part I<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgibKRh7Aaai5TXmCMdDJDjhwie8L50nJSV8wEqAuo-u7WcG-fRfJuRMm8CVY3wLL8frNMr_hRDEAeqr0KsugUtTft2f2L9ezNSIHouMxJpqor29DV6AggDz8Wb9khKGL2Pj5EhWLsBmtw5/s200/P1000069.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055190047129096178" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHednAcMdJBk-e_FkdNIRkkGPnHhxTIRaeNeCpcnxZfC5lMQzD9on0rdaXXtcoBBa53xb6M2YudWWUKE2ugRVq1pMcquvTvU-aP87JInzV8y-UpTbfMO7YM5f4qtS4oXP0UdH1VPJBqQMJ/s200/P1000080.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055190060013998082" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgswNsoQU0gC-GrEoHVuleXtVNEnwjNyK00UsBia6zrtlWXMk1rhxuV9FmrwGrKkK1txRo4F7tatCB7B2rO6OUPH7OzpJ1QL1yxblfIPlDugA4aZjddjAB-UNFQINJCX_xvUXLr7INvOlo2/s200/P1000074.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055190068603932690" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRZ-tIa1TSD5wejefkB-GVvPkhNEnEAygsrrOt2_PAw_Rkw2Up-zt7hvpyzo5soCqZxluj_UpXg-z73oxPWs6WGr-6KmAYOBIslO7CZAvWaGvGtW2SWLT9fSojLIw_97DzkAak6kODzB4t/s200/P1000070.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055190072898900002" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdukTolElwMF8tUZ9wcF-lf4nUKhDdnzqCWMpoMG6EkTAoPtkZ5-MVRlF0WfKqVlg6I_k5pED5K8N90_zmrXvkBmwqtUQP3bYECgEQnnXUHmfpEZM0MvIubR6QbQGkq8oLAOmZzB54Dlk7/s200/P1000072.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055190077193867314" />
For Easter I decided to get out of town and head to the Costa Brava, which is the beautiful coast northeast of Barcelona all the way up to the French border. I left quite early in the morning on the RENFE train, which only goes to Figueres, about an hour inland from the coast. After about 2 weeks of rain, the sun came out and everything was bathed in sunlight again. On the train ride, I passed the gorgeous city of Girona, Catalunya's second largest city. I will have to make a trip there some day.

I finally arrived in Figueres, where I wanted to see the Salvador Dalí museum, but the line to get in was so long, I decided to scrap it. After a nice lunch in the main plaza, I headed to the bus station for the rest of the journey. The journey into Cadaqués was breathtaking. After about a half hour of flat marshy land, we suddenly ascended into the hills. The bus wound its way up to the top and then back down again and was just hugging the cliffside.

We soon descended to Cadaqués, which is a gorgeous little white-washed town. Apparently in the 60s, Salvador Dalí frequented here, as well as the likes of Mick Jagger and other famous people. The town's streets are paved in shale which was amazing. All the streets are windy and narrow and makes for a great day of exploration. After checking into the Hostal Ubaldo, I strolled down to the town square which is right on the harbour. The sun was glistening on the water and the main street was full of people. I stopped for a beer at one of the little cafés that overlook the harbour and watched the sun go down. The beach here is a little more rough, as is the vegetation. I think that is partially why Cadaqués has kept its old-world charm, unlike other nasty touristy spots.

After a short nap back at my room, I went out to explore again. The night sky was full of stars and the labyrinthine streets were truly magical. I stopped into Jazz Rock Bar or something like that. Really cool bar...the candles were perched on top of wax that must have dripped for decades. The walls were plaster, covered with movie posters and photographs autographed by famous people. There was a great band playing and people were dancing wherever they could. After I finished my beer and headed out into the fresh air, I thought how great this would be to share with someone special....Craig where are you?Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-17631079639696976982007-03-11T16:11:00.000-07:002008-12-09T01:58:40.346-08:00A Walk to Parc Guell<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibFSrIOFqQDRqL8wNTJBaWzvlyZuUhtXq5oF039981AXuDNmYI_9ehfGmAXWbD9qOfRpPxIQM4pPQmnsEasVstIeu_F7xlTHqM6tvEpSaHTbH5yHPG3dGQO5mWRKCr_YUo6EbDKmxirVD6/s200/P1020425.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044148965943072322" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjusv6cNoW6R1B9TsomStjMdL6EV3rS3GOxD451jfiRGKCnapdax29KXzBV8DfIJQhsEwfkWky14qFe477bR5oMwuYc0OJ1LpGYqo4eZRmLZJD2mYDgD7mSxEf82sj0-BHGxvAM2pmj0SGl/s200/P1020433.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044148970238039634" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrxj0KX68Kwdx9EouqtcG_Y0o7s80jJz1jJnyeJa7wr4neE0WaQs87FHiTzTWNtK05YjkHMT5udU3Qwfgp3msSA9LrAn-qjKQv_JTz1VtuNLUHybwEcb2Cm0o7utVgDwGl40TKuhllYwXs/s200/P1020430.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044148974533006946" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqVGEHsw-oxG_dBGd1u-5_lZtCC29t8yBLlfyN7dC9MNLzbwDY4hyphenhyphenfhtD9C9x74cbKWDqXKjesTQYRdjv7kdxoSfU8C4dPd0Sjpv8A6D7CpRriyZ2WoihyphenhyphenEJX0j5OmuixPxgJvYB80jplE/s200/P1020448.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044148978827974258" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmkLVXlnCzQNxBLNETGq-P3f7Zmc0Pt5hkOHicV29QAqG26AahVqteoE7m5HxfrZn7MIVyDI6hLmZBw9Xel1Vh2ixIspUbP0xAJSa3yGgGwmi8ahhLPk0uma6QZV43yAsNelyQ8oBJikuo/s200/P1020438.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044148983122941570" />
Today, Ernesto and I decided to walk the 4km to Parc Guell, Gaudi's famed wonderland in the north part of the city. It was a beautiful day and we saw a lot more than the park on the way. Heading out from the house, we walked to Las Ramblas, then headed north. We cut across the huge Plaza Catalunya until we hit Passeig de Gracia.

This long boulevard is always bustling. When Barcelona's northern part (known as the Eixample) wasn't built yet, this street was the main thoroughfare for coach and horses to get to Gracia, once its own town but now part of Barcelona. Passeig de Gracia is quite a noisy and busy street and is where all of the main boutiques are. Some names you will see are Gucci, Prada, Adolfo Dominguez, Zara and much more. Anyone who likes to shop till they drop would love it here.

Along the way, you will also see more of Gaudi's work, like the Casa Batillo, which is a site to see with it's twisted iron work and shiny blue tiles. Apparently the interior is stunning, but I haven't made it there yet. Eventually we hit Avinguda Diagonal which is more of the financial area. You see buildings for companies like Deutschbank around here. This avenue also marks the beginning of the Gracia neighbourhood.

There is truly a different feel here. Lots of little cafés and more boutiques, but the streets are smaller and it feels more like a neighbourhood again. Lots of 'plazas' here to take in coffee or a gelato. Gracia is another spot which is coveted by many...close to the city, but far enough away.

After Gracia, we started going uphill a bit and about 10 minutes away, we stopped to get bocadillos and water. Bocadillos are everywhere her in Spain. Essentially it's a crispy baguette-like sandwich (although about half as long). It can be filled with ham and cheese, tomato and tuna, things like that. They are very good!

We headed uphill even more and we soon got to the entrance. The place was full of tourists, shutterbugs and people just wanting to chill out in this fantastic place. How can I describe this park? It's set into a hill and the entrance has this wonderful, almost enchanted looking cottage with beautiful tile and organic lines to it.

The main staircase leads up to a platform with hundreds of pillars which support the platform above. That platform above was full of people feeling the warm March breeze, looking out on the stunning view of the city or sitting in the little tiles alcoves that act as the platform's railing.

Gaudi made these fantastic rock walkways that spiral up into the hillside. The vegetation is dry but with tonnes of pine trees (or at least pine-like). We stopped on one of the rock precipices that jutted over the public space below and had our picnic in the sun.

After we ate, we walked along the walkways through the woods, feeling the warm sun glinting through the trees. On one path we soon heard a guitar playing and a weird bam! bam! bam! We soon discovered that it was a wonderful flamenco dancer, dancing to the rythym of her fellow guitarist. It was truly a great moment as people gathered around and watched this woman do this amazing dance.

One truly has to experience this park for themselves, for there are just too many views and intricate passageways to describe in pictures. Another jewel in the crown of Barcelona.Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-30688827265537054842007-03-10T15:32:00.000-08:002008-12-09T01:58:41.347-08:00Barceloneta -- Viva la Playa!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpZ99OzO-sPTHcgujt7LeXZ9rGsk4Ku3GZ-rd-9uf2W-s_XDKCS473DccPrNYQN00QKh04XOjhTMrek1nsEDOYt9UxAcpNRBFElL30lG5KXqY04T-83pnRkch0wVR5xy4aChkab8euXPSW/s200/P1020337.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044144250068981234" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcDh-DEld8nXqmz2eU2p98iDU4a4Abi25S9enb778bvdxhuvEH4_ghayjTZFAj9z56g0P55Xt-zpEuw203xOOSN4NhFg984I6EW0CCHFNBJUBdldfKwnLX5PZMn4-nEa7xkGSruFcG3egk/s200/P1020336.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044144258658915842" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgal9I8efMzTS3dhgAmhU_FVw_azh3mYDM-BcnrRIe_MfJ9R1DFdkzuKDEFuy4JTlMcYxY6aaWpvLaxc_vswIdEwg3MqW3BausUEcHNlsc25jlUY5-L9O0pb1JOLJwS1DuV75BG2DpcZ9yu/s200/P1020338.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044144301608588818" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis8e4QkFp2BZPslIIfHbkFT1oOpQ_YzYzywMTidYRpIZ5l0uPkOJnKz0xnP2lzu6RwMNSBW50-w3EdVDr0R2l_UW5PJ7GBE1HFRsQo-UORZWXRM-W-YiHUieZrJt0C5HbSkoqI50gicbNv/s200/P1020341.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044144305903556130" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUmuensQTOOtV5yKte50acC2ont-YNUS8EesGUsXmuTlM3XRUraw03ofspwYXXQsWZCJ1-5i4r5WVpAudchpLLCCtcRksFQvGVAUIMukG_GVX9mebYJLS8XaIqahTqN6URsGEhPqx6cDcl/s200/P1020339.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044144314493490738" />

Today I went for a walk and headed for the boardwalk and the beach. The neighbourhood is known as Barceloneta which iterally means 'little Barcelona'. The area used to be the main fisherman's quarter back in the mid-1800s and is characterized by tiny, dead-straight streets, all running toward the Mediterranean.

On the main boulevard, Passieg de Joan de Borbó, you can find tonnes of amazing seafood restaurants and outdoor cafés. There's tonnes of greenspace, as you can see by the first and second picture. A long tree-lined walkway is filled with cyclists, runners and those who choose to just calmly walk the boulevard and take in the sun.

To the west of Barceloneta is the main marina and the Museu Maritim. I think I heard once that the Museu Maritim used to be a factory, and this whole area in general used to be quite a slum. Not anymore...prices have skyrocketed ever since the city began to clean up the beach during the early 1990s. My roommate Joe told me that Barcelona used to have its 'back to the sea', but more and more this area is being transformed into paradise.

The houses here are a style all of its own. Typically they are not bigger than 500 square metres and each level is one whole apartment. The apartments are typically long and narrow with exposed wood beams. I actually stayed in a place here while I was looking for a place to live and a lot of them have been done up in quite a modern way with exposed brick and modern kitchens.

The main boulevard leads to the sea and right at the end is this great little place to have a 'copa' or a nice strong cup of coffee. The boulevard ends and the place opens up to a huge area with palm trees and lots of space. To the west and east stretches the beach, but the boardwalk begins here and goes east for miles!

If you take the boardwalk, you will pass Frank Gehry's huge gold fish sitting on top of a building plus lots of other modern structures, which I will have to take pictures of another day. Who would have known that March could look like this! I have already headed to the beach, taken off my shoes and my shirt and have sunbathed here....truly heaven!

Just wait until the summer when they put up the little covered places where you can have lunch or have a cold beer and listen to hot Euro beats. This place is going to be wild as the months roll on. Anyway on March 3rd, Ernesto said that all of a sudden we were going to have a housewarming party, since now we finally have a dining room table in the tiny spot by the door. It actually looks quite good with the cranberry red chairs and stools and Ernesto scored from Lacoste, where he works.

Well, it turned out that it was sort of a surprise party for me, which was really sweet. It wasn't a typical surprise party where people were jumping out from behind furniture (not that we have any furniture to jump out from!). We just all sat around chatting, drinking wine, smoking too much.

The second picture is Ernesto (I though I would take some black and whites for this round), the third picture is Piotr and Paolo, and the last picture is Joe, my other roommate from Germany. Piotr is a jewelry designer and is originally from Poland. Paolo is originally from Brazil and is starting an events company.

Other people that were there were Pedro, Otto (you might remember them from Carnaval) and Joe's friend Ingo, visiting from Germany. It's quite amazing how Barcelona is full of people that have come here from all over the world to make a go of it. There is something really special about this city that really attracts people and keeps people here, I think.

Anyway, after a few hours of wine and conversation, we all headed to Salvation, a huge gay club about 15 minutes walk from here. It really doesn't get going until 2am, which is the usual for this city and Spain in general. I think the Lonely Planet was right when they said that Spain leaves most other countries in the dust when it comes to nightlife.

So we all danced the night away and it was great. I especially missed everyone back home around my birthday, but luckily I had some good friends and some good company around me to celebrate.Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-87850892609623686192007-02-25T11:08:00.000-08:002008-12-09T01:58:42.406-08:00Las Ramblas - Part II

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk24dP3JSQmjo2Up0ioWIBquewN47a0BJzBKXN1g1mvgtc57dPVWy9Z5pSn5IJy0uqNlwd30pbhuUpyxRLUKpU_JDS2XXHoeQRAuEdsOiOymaYX4ApYH-kgXOlp2VO7nla2pbMIZb7mdMq/s200/P1020202.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035554866062436642" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOnrKZT6Ph6501HBCP7ANzTgQ5ELgoI3cryqbzR3T2BUG5hBhU4XhEYqNzNtZkptDSWt-Yscgk5O8ORF8p6Ue8j66w0AEQB9cWKyK1kaJ48QT_LKhb1P6Q7grrcl6PdPsrScZJ_D2SZTSj/s200/P1020215.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035554870357403954" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvGk-0wdUzuwslkU-OAknwk-UpOch-qwdMbSLNiGkRAz5vFfvBvyW8O7nJOW7edvcEVh4mOaz6YwHcj1501NJpG7ZhEjhbNGZraosx3gmM3I_-BQzb5pidyl0avDjnieiGH5gmwXqe1ya2/s200/P1020220.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035554878947338562" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG9dwCCYdnBIetnxEz44eKLjUov8yYo-oCZoVnfoVgMazclh4MIZX3m728Bm7-medsKHqtCzXbo3HLCOsAGkmtQbIJCfHrNp0hoOmBUI_FgOUHDaYmn0YHTcVhlHv3-XWGkjDA4ECj_0m8/s200/P1020224.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035554878947338578" />

The Rambla is crowded day and night with tourists and locals alike. The famous newspaper and magazine stands are found all the way up and down the street. This famous street is actually 5 'ramblas' in one. First you have Rambla de Canaletes, named after an old fountain that used to be here. As legend has it, if you drank from the fountain you would one day return to Barcelona. The second part is called Rambla dels Ocells, named for the bird market that lines the street. As you walk down, you can hear birds of all colours and shapes twittering and chirping away. La Rambla de Sant Josep is the next stretch, which is full of many flower stalls, which is why another name for this part is the Rambla de les Flors. Next we encounter La Rambla des Caputxins where you can find the old theatre I mentioned above.

Besides the flower stalls, bird markets and newspaper stands you also encounter the artists near the bottom of the Rambla, painting caricatures of passersby and local artists selling their creations. There are also the infamous men playing the shell games on the street. Apparently you have to watch it around them. Some say that while you're watching intensly at the game, another game is going on...pickpocketers after your wallet!

One of the most amazing parts of Las Ramblas are the people that are painted like statues all along the street. They stand perfectly still until you throw a coin or two into thei bucket and then they come to life. So far I have seen a bronze indian, a silver pixie, a red devil, a silver mermaid and a man that looks like he is made out of iron who rides his bicycle along with his skeleton crew when you throw him some change.

Of course, one more thing that Las Ramblas has, and that's the open air cafés serving people paella, sangria and so much more. Always an interesting place to sit and watch the world go by!

Las Ramblas is truly a hodge-podge of people, sights and sounds. Some can be touristy, with the sex museums and the McDonalds, some are gorgeous like the buildings and the trees, but there's always something going on here whether it's 4pm or 4am!

Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-63460032666370029882007-02-25T10:36:00.000-08:002008-12-09T01:58:43.253-08:00Las Ramblas - Part I

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOO18GUcbL_7Th0alFH3pQmiagPrHynFRQwKzuHfK24-NaP5OipTcXz22cC9X9t_0yzSIa2BVkdIofK3ilqmNWCbeQd9hhskv9PFvWtWUnFCyzgXPfjLP2-itc937emzhAjk1vpiGbbnVz/s200/P1020210.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035553848155187410" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtDzJjSNiB0pQCX-xydOJWjWI4QgZJa_IInI63amTpRDnnPBY2esEoJfOlexEevhW7P-ZvhczM9Aatwau3Gl_HoDDTJY4_CI3JPerA3mj-BJb6mSNtvobB2SIkCHt4UqkgWmdijZotvlc8/s200/P1020203.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035553852450154722" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoH8GSaPBdNZoefVKTuG54YEyDh7YMhUPdPvbv92hhyphenhyphenylZ-PPlFDmyvJk_H_52_S86Q7ntyiy3ax0pC8BL6x7-Zou8j2I5DL9oMizXxtVnulIvxgMV9VA8n8W6fbclXPriQvFeKVUMO5Cc/s200/P1020207.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035553856745122034" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxJ7RlRT4S-5ziEhdtpUMFDNykFd50hu8PGmop8IdYzWbN2KcfiXMP51pJi7wlScHabe3fZ2nnjZHqnCbu2AHnOSpR8KPVQO43-Vv_MxVgxdJEVVamnsbcaYzmPYlSNbTiqtBtf-aUShw5/s200/P1020209.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035553861040089346" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQWsu6XZPsjGwC0z8yNbJBo93skHTPT97kdz-af6mh7kyZQkUWKDo44vMoBdkWAGeW5PW7xliDl9hfHLqzixMGjBqKCFCveME-c-pEUNUsfSQXT_gs1aD9kl_U2Zy7rOgnd93E3ZDbsE2L/s200/P1020213.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035553873924991250" />

I thought I would take the time out today to take a few shots of Las Ramblas. This walking boulevard is the main 'rambla' of the old city and is about a 5 minute walk from the apartment. This is probably the most famous street in Spain and when you walk along the tree-lined 'street' you can see why.

Las Ramblas runs from Plaza Catalunya, the huge square which is the transit hub of the city centre, all the way down to the harbour where the statue of Columbus stands on a huge pillar pointing across the sea to the New World. La Rambla gets its name from a stream that used to run along here, and the Arabic word is 'raml'.

This street divides the old city in half from north to south. On its eastern flank is El Raval, my neighbourhood. On the west side you have the Gothic Quarter. Beautiful old buildings adorn each side of the street and the beautiful Teatre del Liceu is one of my favourites. Along this street is also the entrance to the Boqueria Market, which I will definitely write about another day!

Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-16904595885589679602007-02-22T05:32:00.000-08:002008-12-09T01:58:44.045-08:00El Raval - Part I

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZaZzKWo37l0V7zqTiMn2cSNl_0KT211WRJy_GdJQb5zcm07cN5fs0KKDHHBlpCqrXPMuenfghyphenhyphenFA4ICSd_cHTi5uOW33Rh8nXdPQ3PFEowLlF_MowxLhbsTMFpuq_CDEZD2JipMAgHKYn/s200/P1020183.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034351661039233154" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiRKikQhF22UvNI__h2tbdl1hbXGRLYhW2mLps3WBPdKwpuar_QwSDLdnvErN6eWV8SCRV65G5Z73QGpCvHPrevpgl0hH0Y-7fVmlrCfMU_IjJJ6TZMlIlYETvywGsQZxXcUUnPgW_Ybib/s200/P1020174.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034351665334200466" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw1lQz-nwcw1p1or5oUTbDyprkdsy43XcR7uyNF1uZqFyH7955FZKJDrmpwBUTeHnYblIYGoqgsz2HImyDKXS1qdqKk5EeqAWYNCh7xzRYnJGg6x1ukHycqT9vixJYpgWCbDBhvgUbN1nF/s200/P1020182.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034351669629167778" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPUUSQLEP8r6xDkhKrcNRTsqmA-q3zuUkV1ttXXkYYHqOZLEvkPxoSl8i9R7bl1Yq2VdZa0JFdMdMg0YNmTofmHfnsx7k3PTFdGJ2XGzjs3Ig5rrXccfP55vlaojs9ozvOc1PXHQ6PnjGv/s200/P1020190.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034351673924135090" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWslphXHUVOhFH0R0RNf3RAIJgT2uQAU4xzDqVvQE0EF7KwDHfh3xusCffcZse3A6JRW28aSB4JSETOupXktDajYCKoZiRmDlG_JleXTpCah1tkYeEVsABewCsuyG0KAZBagJAruac_H91/s200/P1020186.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034351678219102402" />

I took some time out today to take some pictures of my neighbourhood. The area is called Raval and is in the old city. The word 'raval' comes from an Arabic word describing the one-time suburban sprawl of this area to the south. This area has been a home for centuries for prostitutes and bohemians alike, and in the 1920s was famed for its brothels, cabarets and taverns. Even Picasso lived here for a while on Carrer Nou de la Rambla. By the 1960s many of the brothels had shut down, but was still a rowdy post when the American fleet came to port. El Raval was brought into the walls of the city in the 14th Century and in the 19th Century the walls were torn down and the streets that replaced them still trace the old boundary.

This neighbourhood received a bit of a boost with the construction of the Museu d'Art Contemporani Barcelona or MACBA (see 2nd picture). A lot of trendy little bars and shops have since sprung up around here. For all of you Torontonians, it definitely has a 'Queen St W' feeling to it, although there is so much more at play here in this 'barrio' ('barri' in Catalan). The mixture of modern boutiques and art galleries with old bars and tavernas (5th picture) adorned with art nouveau signs and stained glass is truly wonderful.

To the south of Carrer de l'Hospital, you get more of a North African and Pakistani vibe. Halal meat shops are everywhere, as well as tonnes of cheap phone and internet stores.

The new Rambla de Raval (4th picture) is also being built through the neighbourhood, which is a beautiful walking boulevard adorned with palm trees. A new centre for film is also being built as well as a new area for housing. You can definitely feel the neighbourhood changing right before your eyes.

Closer to the apartment, there are a lot of little 'plazas' and squares (see 3rd picture), with lots of cafés and restaurants. It's perfectly heaven sitting in the square, having the best coffee you've ever had and quietly reading a book in the afternoon sun.
My favourite place near the apartment is in the Plaça de Vincenç Martorell (see 1st picture). A simple walk in this neighbourhood can lift your spirits and transport you to another time and place...truly magic!

Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-6529406959413880642007-02-20T02:51:00.000-08:002008-12-09T01:58:44.518-08:00Views from the Terrace<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQVKvjB6RrFmtvhT4bt0YkgCh3KVDC6y63c9sfP0MAHXUfJTYqb3ObrboUk8qN6ghNLIDL3MgxjVGaC9jHQabm24lqKNwSWdsk_JPqDh2KzryGR4tjB96ftdTIygEsGvdYtXjc3DA5-9Kc/s200/P1020170.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5033568039961110594" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw4XHydOfMDN7AVbb_u3NQ97AK55o27SoujeZmQJW1UU3kUqHFAISMCSA__MTi2-ggMNyGLC-Jtv17cmcMQlWSwb9XZZ9MUGj5fbvl3VpwbGrFUnWc9_yR5saIrprxc25aTFZzXKlilbGk/s200/P1020171.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5033568048551045202" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix7HFRcIOxdFcb87ARvDvfx3Ag9M8VN9e5pMf1gGSzLfY_XizJpbFwW95nfPuZPcpyFgk4__yfZzOsBMCvWisxOXNrQVZPtVhNLnCE6Qll_8a6F1pUtHQ3l7hS2Rt9dF7w7ba80Aac2ag5/s200/P1020172.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5033568048551045218" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4EB7AbixeqbkOWGozBoJsMr8B6R_dX5fwXOBzWAzfbcOjXpfeExY4H5srF_StL19mLeyOkIl_nTWGSlClr5-ogQPIq9d8jsxiIVkgwO9jIDXvi1in_qGJqjQ6DJslCqpwK5mohaJ3un_F/s200/P1020173.edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5033568052846012530" />
I just thought I would add some more pictures of the apartment, this time of the terrace, which we have access to. You can see quite far in 3 directions. To the southwest, you can see Montjuic (Jewish Mountain), the National Art Museum (MNAC) and the Torre Calatrava communications tower (see fourth picture down).

To the north, you can see the hills that rise up to the Zona Alta. I have been told it's where the rich and famous live in Barcelona (see second picture). At night there is a beautiful cathedral on top of the hill that is lit up every night.

If you look over the side of the railing, you can also look south and see some of the port and the cable car that zips tourists along from Montjuic to Barceloneta (see first picture). Today was a bit hazy, so you won't be able to see much.

The last picture in the group (third picture) is looking west. This street leads to the new modern art museum and the neighbourhood of San Antoni. All of the apartments look beautiful at night, casting warm light onto the streets below.

Apparently the trees on the street here turn pink with blossoms in the spring. Can't wait to see that! Of course, it feels like spring to me already. The weather has consistently been around 15 degrees give or take 3 degrees or so. One thing that's great is the amount of sunlight here too. It never seems to be that stone grey that you get in our long Canadian winters!

Just to let you know, if some of you are squinting to see the pictures you can click on them for an enlarged view. I think we will have some good parties up here in the summer!Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-31227684423761851922007-02-18T07:32:00.000-08:002008-12-09T01:58:44.882-08:00Carnaval 2007<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6BGg0WfWf0Rb8OjPM4vKiLpGxZiCxalSOJlaVczEc_tnrQzz58KizIDMXu6azKBA9QB0jrMvirslUyn6ntBES4KrLbdiwwK6FKOw8TZbYf1G2B0uSMw50VkWm8wxdeX5Ctg7yBKIuEo5g/s200/DSC05750.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5032922102649595954" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSBTbGapdIp7v7ITRgkMHMshryTBTU4bE_tiQTyz6Peawny-079Bhz127yRL71iaHALd9TMlFikM_w4y8QQ9yL_xLnHjmO_3cDWQO8iYIHB7Nb9z1iSCmEss4I9H4MLGc5JJrrmjWbB7Us/s200/DSC05761.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5032919285151049730" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkSfo0iN1faJJ2rAHAz0YqArSq-RYWolLa_rLIL6DSQR4tK8ouSt6PggXxqQdDCGDrneaKTK2d4mhiKqbpiDQA6ISSVQFL4OpvjsP7XIGN5_aEqfixWvIs8qYz0nzibaKjT58LirzW6ZZI/s200/DSC05766.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5032919289446017042" />
Yesterday was Carnaval here in Barcelona, and what a party it was! The night started late, as with everything here. My roommate Ernesto invited his friends over. Our group consisted of Otto, me, Pedro, Ernesto, an Italian guy named Marco and Edgar (in first picture, from left to right). After a few drinks, we ran at a brisk pace to the Metro station called Passeig de Gracia. To get there, you have to walk up Las Ramblas, through Plaza Catalunya and up the Rambla de Catalunya. As usual, the city was full of people, yet this time there were a lot of people dressed up as pirates, witches, vampires and of course, the odd drag queen!

We finally made it to the the station and went down into the Metro where the 'rodiales' (regional trains) are. Tonnes of people were waiting for the train in a variety of costumes. The train arrived, which was a mini-party in itself. The ride took about 30 minutes, and then we all piled off the train.

Sitges is a beautiful seaside village full of lots of winding streets. The streets in the centre were filled with people drinking, dancing and having a great time. The first bar we went into was more like a taverna. Drag queens were on top of the bar, singing and banging their tambourines. The place was wall-to-wall!

We only had one drink and then headed to another bar, which was thumping out lots of house beats. Across the street, was Pachita, an offshoot of the famous Pacha bar that originated in Ibiza back in 1966. Back then, it was a hippie scene, but has slowly morphed into the dance music scene. The music was amazing and it was also wall-to-wall. I seemed to be very popular with the drag queens! Anyway, it was a great party, and at about 4am we all headed back to the station. Everyone was pretty much destroyed on the train home, but what a great time for my first Carnaval!Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-48728343648058642062007-02-10T12:24:00.000-08:002008-12-09T01:58:45.455-08:00My Trip to Penedes Wine Country<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFMpLY-H45mHWg1w8izCDu_jI2UqoT72CPF4CCruWErH1hvw2nQiziinTy1bauGSRX9ml7oE4xLNbj9BVHnSD2f9a13rSWrp0Y9WeRc8OVcrSKIBUTs9jTv2TM8Bu3qZpE86hTaBkzZk6-/s200/P1020001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5030009335338518706" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigQ3gZAkjea7RFGBi9qTOYHHuKSOIJRqIiHL_sUjFJRa7sV5xYtRxl1YiYNESMbg7cVmJrtgjrDe4rWhQpVtGEOs5byGcbFcnsbbJq2284cJ3iYL491OUD2aegobS7UXapazJ9JtLl8QHO/s200/P1020007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5030009339633486018" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0_1oAShBhXFOS-OAiA7qLP_Zi2_c_z_xYNkv96fySG7zizDeXZOZhFpMcjqq_HuA27kiIUe7R6ZeQe9juUsCBHyX5QuJezsfKlAN5_Yno45nZTTg7OtMJg_6UtjEj6xtVnmw01mpabqQw/s200/P1020012.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5030009343928453330" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPMYw7qwsCw4f9NPj6_bVx2_UPABZOveKSrW3x-v_N4EdRKUxibND7rZpnq_Gg1Tee6KP5AQe1JGBqXygKvuPdGy_vmqz1sPNonyRP0X9KARiV92aWqLjDP7yHfJrAWDgF5mcqH1C6QnVP/s200/P1020016.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5030009343928453346" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE6C3At9dQ8GzyvW6Lu4c183bw-yeD4LOBn0RYaEN0CqFw8SUyQrjWKr7__0xL4QMKiQAqhx3uJ4d1J6d9qVL7Ata57dqeB2r3VKCqI7LFPkkBk3oxf2ebWGvyX7L0_FikC6TQjdQLbZHM/s200/P1020025.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5030009343928453362" />
Another great day here in Spain. Hard to believe it's February with days like these. My friend Rosa, who I met on the Internet last year, had invited me to an 'excursión' to Penedès wine country, inlcuding a typical Catalán meal called a 'calçotada'.

I left the house at around 9am (after a quick café con leche y croisant!) and headed west on the Metro to Hospitalet, a borough just outside of the Barcelona city centre. There I met Rosa and Román (pronounced Rom-AH) where we waited for Tomass, an Italian friend of theirs. Tomass soon showed up and we headed for the hills in the car.

The day couldn't have been more perfect. Blue sky without a single cloud! The countryside along the way was stunning. Green arid hills with terra cotta coloured earth. This is prime wine-growing country, so the hills are peppered with small grape trees. The champagne here is called cava, since France has the exclusive right to use the word 'champagne' due to the region where it comes from there. We actually passed the Freixenet vineyard, which a lot of you will remember from many New Year's gone by.

We soon got to our meeting point, which was a little town more or less near Tarragona, southwest of Barcelona. There, we met 5 girlfriends of Rosa's, all super-friendly. We took a short hike up the hillside, with amazing rocks and crevasses and soon came upon the caves famous in the area. After paying the entrance fee, the guide soon had us going down the long, dark, narrow tunnel into the belly of the mountain. Fresh water ran along small waterways and millions of tiny stalactites were everywhere. These tiny wonders of nature grow only millimetres in hundreds, if not thousands of years, so needless to say, we weren't to touch anything!

After the tour we hiked into more vineyard fields and it was great to feel the sun on my face. As we walked, I took turns talking with everyone. We headed back to the village and got into our cars and headed for the restaurant. After asking for directions once or twice, we finally got there!

The restaurant was called 'Restaurant can Serafi', which is on the main road between Puigdàlber and Vilafranca, and we were about to have an amazing meal. The restaurant was filled with that wonderful smell of a roaring fire in the oven. We were first served fresh thick pieces of bread. With the bread in hand, first we rubbed the bread with a freshly cut piece of garlic. Next comes the drizzling of the olive oil and then you rub a fresh tomato over the bread, gently squeezing out the juices. Delicious!

With the bread, we were served amazing red wine from the region, and it came in small decanters with a long spout that jutted out on one side. The tradition is to pour the wine into your mouth, being careful not to touch the spout. Let's just say, thank goodness for the bibs they provided!

Next came the fire-roasted green onions. There aren't the small ones that we get in Canada, they're the larger variety. You have to grab the onion where the flesh begins in one hand, and with the other hand you gently peel away the outer layer. You then dip the onion into this amazing sauce, which was sort of creamy but had a roasted pepper flavour to it. Delicious and wonderfully messy! You can see the long onions on the table in one of the pictures to the left.

Next came the main dish, which was a few small pieces of meat, a potato and some white beans. Yes, I did indulge in this feast, for all of you that are wondering! This main dish was served with chilled cava, which tasted delicious.

A perfect meal all around with good company and lots of chatter and good cheer. On one side of me, people were speaking Catalán, and on the other side of me people were speaking Castellano (Spanish). Tomass and I spoke to each other in English, even though he's Italian.

After another wonderful coffee, we all went outside for some fresh air, and were greeted by a stunning sunset, with the sky lit up in gold and auburn. After exchanging a few photos and phone numbers, we all piled in the cars and headed back to Barcelona. What an amazing day....new traditions, new friends and of course new adventures!Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-1834194940167646082007-02-08T00:29:00.000-08:002008-12-09T01:58:45.984-08:00The Apartment<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkasZCL-GBfit77QJnsQ0IYHRP55D4mBotS-CJT9rlm6kLeuoPSNZ4lEyN4MSkZaLb1dzU7B0-Ghfm1NjhoPXNYQRQHT0epW_T4V4fjvT9LReQ2YT2U6oyRAJyZlgOhRdmFkFcA-__UE8q/s200/P1010068.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5029083314619697250" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9U-Rnnlp8WkGC1_BpzUE4YQGG2zeR6jfTZ4LfV5VG5brHyy1_8ZrvtRNFUH2N-pTgt2KJMGSte4oDNtFI76sC-diaLS1hX00Mqiv5dbTbk_b4VRf7Z8JZCn8R2YmutgwfuOIUFtaZk7_H/s200/P1010067.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5029083318914664562" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMpMJ9ZFmx_jnfVqdONwGq1jKzeJ54BHVg3paMaL_TgC7IWF_o9ZbdzCd3RU0OUPaE_v1335X4pXFvmihGNUvA9wWdGxEQ7MeLRhVW6oUUUWCzhePu994-n9NQLKnxUq-hVvUy2rpCALLv/s200/P1010062.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5029083323209631874" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqrRhd84DYH00LxQmAZ-R3n4zL0XpUl4R_C80dK92fNePDB1WIEoTnf7lcG3zXZoW493Y_t7euDTTelMSqAq-kkR6KCagkxECQ7u_eWLx4ATrJSLa7OOLKnI7TDsTAijyskJKiatKzDem6/s200/P1010061.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5029083327504599186" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisrjTAn9pdB5hzX0N3w5A2io1ns5uIRKsImUoQT5p0oZ_7ckGxizpFxCY-NbQqL8d2yUudvwk237h38-xhtukuD1YRRwmstDJGqjW_0tRhwViDPsKTQ95Xc8HkQ9tES4AXXxueG_7nWyN5/s200/P1010066.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5029083331799566498" />
I have finally added some pictures of the interior of the building. One shot is of the staircase. This is actually looking down. The walls are plastered, I think, with a beautiful pattern all the way up the building. You will see another shot of the interior shaft of the building. This runs all the way up from the bottom. Some of the rooms of the other apartments look out onto this area, which is quite common in Barcelona, although all of our rooms face out onto the street.
There are 2 pictures of my room. As you can see, I haven't fuly unpacked yet, but it's nice and big! I just painted last week in a nice taupe/sand colour...really nice and fresh. Ernesto, one of my new roommates, and I painted the hallway this colour as well. Everything is looking really great!
There is one picture of the kitchen. It's kind of small, but it gets a lot of light in the day. Then again, everything is smaller in Europe...fridges, stoves, cars, etc. You really only use what you need, which is great from an environmental perspective. There is a small iron contraption bolted to the outside window in the kitchen to hang our clothes to dry. Really quite fun and charming to do this! Unfortunately I have a limit of how many pictures I can have per entry, so this is all I will post for now.
I went to see 'Babel' last night at the theatre, which was an experience. For anyone who has seen the movie, they will know that the film contains many languages and is subtitled, even in the English version, so it was quite a 'trip' hearing English one minute and then reading Spanish subtitles for the other scenes in Japan, etc! The popcorn, which is called 'palomitas' here, was great. There are a few theatres that provide films in an un-dubbed version, so I will be able to see lots of films. Anyway, it's amazing how much I can now understand in Spanish as time goes on. Soon I will be able to watch anything. Ernesto says that one day I will dream in Spanish, and that's when you know something has switched over in your head!
Well, that's all for now...lots more to come on this great adventure.Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5786662979311452818.post-37232250550297786842007-02-06T04:17:00.000-08:002008-12-09T01:58:46.797-08:00My New Home<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2IC3ohOBG8GHjD1RYP7DCT07ZHbTx-r4nBnv43H5bio5h-NF-v-yEPhJFFjBD4pio3RzN1fKX3XXHtZniXlRYJHqLDoNvdu6pQiNqsKz7_fJ0TemWwuFY7FM1bd2XYY9rB0rA2ZXnb_2U/s320/P1010072.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5028401223092585682" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9-R0NVxtfiRjVEsvlvhPBzbVT5fMWU6Ad3Qvo0xer3UnDwveHIqu-BDgBLYMB3WXMLIeVpkONYGPpQYRFFxMkTsGgiUM6k5rwsbu-08qIZ8KVlrtpIns9iqh-AEvgMvUmoaGrq50iVThx/s320/P1010071.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5028401223092585698" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUYYmh6JA0OLFdgGqkMY7L-kK0_ZmNrPfqjdx1l7B_9bMpYdWNpvOwdPpYygbfnZz_uEf262xcuKBkrJkJEAV2zXNb6pLctxA02FymXpSbiZLTsIVdt0w3QjWJrTCFhjKk6tq5v34wHB7j/s320/P1010070.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5028401227387553010" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoh0wJjT4wNct5yK2YTwPH6vDhGFntHgDlXfTyQkNVje5aWa11rN7cntXHvlXMqIG6Wkzd25t7LfQUsauxuPx7f3Sk3jIgvjt7CCbC-RmbLeHoADnLSBbm4_bv91I0VxDp4trwhmw2dQJH/s320/P1010073.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5028401231682520322" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSnKaqawLt3jvXIE-hOKFTwpMayvdJrtK_zZTrYzi5Qb85kDUYlNqI07qWYdkVRaoKTuFsIMlWoCutqjdHiKUzx9gMB-V0syyFm446AggUypWbZb8xHGKGxgOKqrhmQcxUO5Jvw4GIBNJe/s320/P1010069.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5028401235977487634" />
Well, I've finally moved into a new place in Barcelona. It's in the Raval neighbourhood, which is southwest of the main Rambla walking boulevard. It's on a beautiful street and the nieghbourhood has quite a Bohemian feel to it. I'm just 2 blocks from the Boqueria Market and 2 blocks from the MACBA museum.
Our apartment is the top row of shuttered windows and my room is on the corner. We face southwest, so we get lots of light all through the day. Right now it's about 15 degrees in the day and 10 degrees at night. As you can see, the door to the place is massive and beautifully carved. The entranceway is definitely cathedral-like and dramatic. Quite spooky at night!
I have some more pictures of the interior, which I will post soon. Finally have a place to rest my head!Adam Leveretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075351749774002954noreply@blogger.com1
